Is Coffee Really Addictive?

I remembered that when I was very little, my mother used to tell my sisters and me not to drink coffee as it is very addictive. She was a very good example as she used to drink one jug in the morning during breakfast and one jug in the afternoon. Without it, she will feel very uneasy as she was unable to concentrate in her work. Therefore, I have never dare to touch coffee since young.

Many of my friends love coffee. Whenever, we meet at Starbucks or Coffee Bean, they will order espresso or latte except me. I will always have to go for hot chocolate or tea.

Early this year, I started reading articles on coffee. I read there are several researches that have been carried out to show the benefits of coffee. Hence, I had my first cup of instant coffee in the office one day. It tastes great and I did not have any side effects of addiction. I choose to drink whenever I wish to.

As everyone knows, coffee has caffeine and if taken in moderation, there are benefits more than harm. On the other hand, if a person consumes a lot of coffee, it will also mean more harm than benefits.

In the past, I would take some dark chocolate when I needed some caffeine boost to keep me awake during the afternoon, as dark chocolate not only has caffeine but also antioxidant, which is good for anti-aging.

Now I have instant coffee as another option to give me a caffeine boost whenever I needed in the office. As I have mentioned earlier, coffee has several benefits if you drink it with moderation. Researchers said that it should not be more than 3 cups a day.

1) Lower the risk of heart disease. It is also said it is the caffeine in the coffee that has the protective effect.
2) Plenty of antioxidant like cranberries, grapes, dates and so on.
3) Protects you against a variety of ailments and diseases. Coffee can help in the prevention and treatment of diseases and illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, liver disease, skin cancer and more.

Remember that coffee itself contains no calories, no fat and barely any carbohydrates and it is also a good source of antioxidants. One thing is for sure, in spite of the few old-wives-tales, modern research is revealing more and more ways in which coffee can help us stay healthy. Unlike medicine and supplements, having a cup of coffee gives you a delicious experience.
