All About Espresso

What is Espresso?

The word Espresso refers to two things: a beverage and a method of brewing.. Espresso is most often a blend of multiple coffees that are then roasted together. While roasted beans of any level can be brewed in the espresso method, the most common roast levels are dark. Brewing espresso requires a specialized machine that forces a small amount of hot water through finely ground beans to produce a concentrated beverage of about 1 fluid ounce. Though most people believe that espresso contains more caffeine than drip coffee, a single espresso shot has about half the caffeine of a typical 8 ounce cup of coffee.

A Brief History

The brewing of espresso is an Italian invention that dates back to the late 19th century. The earliest known reference to making coffee in this style is a patent registered in 1884 for a coffee machine that separately controlled the steam and water in brewing. It is regarded as the earliest invention of the espresso brewing method. Improvements were made to this invention during the early years of the 20th century, and the consumption of this beverage rose along with urbanization in Italy. In the 1950s, espresso became popular in the western United States,.. Not until the 1980s and '90s did gourmet coffee, including espresso, gain a strong footing in the United States with the emergence of Starbucks and other Seattle-based coffee roasters.

Popular Espresso Drinks

In the United States, the Latte has gained enormous popularity. Brewed espresso is poured in the bottom of the cup and then steamed milk and a small amount of foam is added to the top. Variations of this drink are many, made with different kinds of flavored syrups. The cappuccino is similar to a latte in that espresso is on the bottom, though a cappuccino has little or no steamed milk and considerably more foam. Additional popular espresso-based drinks include the macchiato (espresso "marked" with a small amount of milk on top), Americano (espresso diluted with hot water), and Cubano (a shot of espresso taken with sugar).

Straight espresso is most commonly drunk in non-chain coffee shops and quality restaurants where the quality of the coffee is high, and the coffee actually tastes good without additional flavoring.

The quality of an espresso relies heavily on the brewing process and freshness of the beans. It is recommended to grind the beans immediately before drawing the shots of espresso for the best results. While espresso may be brewed at home using specialized machines, most often it is made by a trained barista (Italian for bartender) in a coffee shop.

Reusable K-Cup Filters: The Next Big Trend?

In an attempt to save money, avid coffee users have begun using the reusable K-Cup filter, My K-Cup, as means of getting their morning cup of Jo.

The onetime $17.95 fee will leave you with a filter basket, filter holder and lid that is compatible with all Keurig coffee makers. The filter paper will need to be replaced, but several different websites offer 50 for about $6 so you won't have to dig too deep into your pockets.

When installing the My K-Cup into your Keurig brewer, you need to remove the black K-Cup original filter that comes with the brewer. This process is described on Keurig's website, "first lift the handle of the brewer, and then grasp the outside housing of the K-Cup Holder with the thumb and index finger of one hand and push up from below with the index finder of your other hand while holding the housing firmly. "

The process sounds harder than it is and should take no longer than five minutes. Look at the bright side, this is a onetime thing because once the reusable filter is installed it can be removed, cleaned and replaced in a matter of minutes.

My K-Cup is essentially a smaller version of filters used in regular coffee makers, but has the convenience of a single shot K-Cup. Keurig recommends that the filter holds two tablespoons of coffee beans for every six ounces of water, but when filling the filter you must be very careful.

The coffee grinds should be fairly loose and cannot exceed the top of the filter basket. When cleaning the owner must make sure that no grinds are left in the upper rim of the filter, a key part of cleaning that is often overlooked.

After every use, the filter needs to be cleaned with soap and rinsed through warm water. Be wary when cleaning because the filter, as well as your brewer, will be very hot, I'd say let it sit for at least 20 minutes before you start cleaning.

The paper filter can be disposed of after usage, while the reusable K-Cup, after rinsing, will be ready for reuse.

The filter should appear dry, this means that all the coffee was properly transferred into the cup. If the filter is indeed wet, that means there is a problem with the brewer's purge airflow and will not produce an ideal result. If that is the case, you should remove and reinstall the filter and if the problem consists contact Keurig's customer service.

The coolest aspect of My K-Cup is that you can use any type of beans you want, which is a first for any single shot filters. Although the process hasn't been perfected reusable K-Cups are still the cheapest, most convenient way to brew your early morning coffee.

Flavored Gourmet Coffee Is Great For Everyone!

Flavored gourmet coffee is a great way to have coffee with a bit of gourmet flair and sweetness. Flavoring coffee dates back to the Arabs in Yemen who from the very beginning began adding spices while the coffee was brewing. Today purveyors use natural and natural identical flavorings to create some of the most unique coffees in the world. The result is coffee with added sweetness and depth of flavor.

When I started drinking coffee, I would only drink flavored gourmet coffee or coffee that was loaded down with flavored coffee creamer. My palate was not used to the richness and robustness of the black coffee. My palate has changed, and now I enjoy drinking both flavored and non flavored gourmet coffee. Sometimes depending on the day, or if I feel like something sweeter and lighter, I will choose the flavored blends over non flavored.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of different kinds of gourmet flavored coffee on the market today. Some of the best sellers include: Hazelnut, French Vanilla, Irish Creme, Amaretto and Tiramisu. Today many find purveyors and suppliers of this wonderful beverage are offering more interesting flavors such as: Swiss Chocolate, Baked Alaska, Blueberry Cream and Caramel Apple. The flavors sound so intriguing and decadent, and in reality they are really not bad for you at all! Many companies use all natural flavorings or flavorings that do not add any extra calories.

Another great thing about gourmet flavored coffees is they are quite inexpensive! Many companies flavor only premium, high-grown, 100% Arabica coffees. That means treating yourself and your guests to superior coffee is not only delicious, but also quite cost-effective. The prices for this are right on par with the non-flavored choices and readily available for everyday drinking pleasure.

Gourmet flavored coffee is great for entertaining with as well. I like to serve a rich flavored coffee with notes of chocolate and cinnamon for after dinner. If I'm entertaining overnight guests I love to serve a sweet and light gourmet coffee with French vanilla or Hazelnut notes in the morning. This way the guests and my family can enjoy the different gourmet offerings. I also like to serve different choices depending on the seasons or holidays. One of my favorites is to serve Autumn Harvest Spice in the Fall. It has notes of pumpkin, nutmeg and spicy-sweet cinnamon which is perfect for Halloween and pumpkin harvest time!

For The Perfect Cup of Coffee At Home

When creating the perfect cup of coffee, there are a few tips to keep in mind. When you're learning how to create the perfect cup of coffee, keep these things in mind and you won't be let down. For starters, you'll want to use a milk frother. This adds richness to your coffee that is unmatched anywhere. they can also be used for other things such as lattes, cappuccinos, espresso, hot chocolate and even milk shakes. Yes, you can even use ice cream! There are many things you can do with a good milk frothing machine.

For starters, use a quality bean. Don't use pre ground coffee beans - grind your own! The best coffee comes from freshly grounded coffee beans. The way you roast and toast your coffee beans has a huge impact on the overall taste of your cup of coffee. Roasting releases the natural flavor and aroma of the bean and has a big impact on whether your coffee is smooth, rich or mellow. Experimentation is key! Next up is to choose a good grinding method. Here are some general coffee techniques and the affect they have on your coffee. An automatic drip means you'll be getting a medium sized grind. A plunger/French press means you'll receive a coarse grind, where as a percolator grind gives you an even coarser grind. An espresso grind is extremely fine.

How to create the perfect cup of coffee can be confusing at first but if you use a good milk frother and a start with the guidelines I just wrote, you'll be makin a perfect cup of coffee in no time. Good milk frothers will also allow you to make great lattes, espressos, milkshakes, whipped cream and hot chocolate. Experiment until you find something you like!

Some of the most popular warm beverages are made from milk. This includes coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, espressos and even hot chocolate. The list goes on and on. In order to get the desired result, you will need to add steamed milk, which can be done by using a milk frother. However, there are lots of different types available to get your steamed milk. One that will automatically heat your milk up and keep it at a good temperature is a good starting point.

The type of you require depends on your needs. How much you expect to use it, how much milk you'll need and what type of jug to use are all things to consider. There are five basic types of milk frothers. This includes manual frothers, battery powered frothers, automatic electric frothers, espresso makers with steam wand and handheld milk frothers. When frothing with a jug, keep in mind that you will want to use milk that is right for the recipe you're using. This also determines what type of milk frother you will need.

The shape of the frothing jug is normally just for the type of "art" you would like your milk frother to produce. Bell shaped jugs are a great option that are good for creating a rolling or troidal pattern. The way you pour the resulting milk will also greatly impact the type of milk frothing you get. However, you'll want to use a smaller jug when you only need a cup or two at a time.

Below you find a list of the various types of milk frothers available with a short explanation of the pro's and con's of each type to aid you in making a choice of which type will suit your needs best.

Precisely What Coffee Lovers Must Have

I do not drink coffee, though my nose likes the smell of brewed coffee in the morning. Maybe it is because at home, when I was still young, it was an indication that my mother was up and was preparing for us a fantastic meal for breakfast. We were so excited we just couldn’t wait. Sometimes it was at our grandmother’s house.

A cup of brewed coffee and a slice of apple pie, that was what my grandmother served every time visitors came by the house and it was often.

For over 15 centuries, many have benefited from drinking Coffee. It sprung from the Kaffa, Buno and Ethopia regions. They had their chief coffee producer on the port city of Mocha, Yemen where Italian business people got a hold of it. Then in the 1600’s, it scattered all over Europe. The Turkish people had no idea that it could become one of the most favorite drinks in history. Coffee houses began ‘brewing’ all over North American in 1668 in towns such as Boston, New York and Philadelphia. Every American who drinks coffee, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, can consume an average of more than eight ounces a day.

You will be surprised of the benefits of drinking coffee. Coffee contains high levels of anti-oxidants, a substance that slows down the oxidation of body cells and eliminates free radicals. The Harvard Health Publication revealed that drinking coffee in moderation can lower the possibility of acquiring stones in the gall bladder, cancer of the colon, damage on the liver, and Parkinson’s disease. It also invigorates the body and stimulates the brain.

It is recommended that coffee be consumed in moderation since it is a stimulant. Too much of a good thing is also bad. With coffee, you only need to drink 2 cups a day. Too much coffee intake can create feelings of fear, worry, dread and can lead to panic, and in others, the increase possibility of having a heart attack. If you find that you are jittery or nervous after drinking coffee, cut back.

A good cup of brewed coffee is always the best when you grind the fine and fresh coffee beans. As soon as the beans are ground, precious oils that make your coffee taste great are lost. Sipping from a cup of delicious brewed coffee ground from newly picked beans. Simply think about it. To be able to savor the taste of a freshly brewed coffee, first you must have is a coffee grinder. You might also want to consider a personal suggestion from me, concerning coffee grinders.I have one and use mine to grind nuts and seeds to make a coating for food instead of breadcrumbs.I grind almonds, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, mix them together with paprika, herbs, a little salt and pepper. When you are frying your food, this coating is excellent for your salmon cakes, or chicken and even fish. After that I fry it on the pan and then serve with mayonnaise, lemon, garlic and horseradish sauce, yummy! When I use herbs in my dish, there are times I want them very refined so I use my coffee grinder. Have you ever thought of using the coffee grinder for something else? If so, then buy two units, one for the coffee beans and the other for the nuts, seeds and herbs. Premium beans are the best choice for brewing coffee. They even have different tastes for you to choose from. If you have unclean drinking water, put a filter on or use spring water to brew your coffee. It will even taste better. You might think of getting organic coffee as well. Try various flavor beans to know your preference. When we were small, our parents allowed us to drink a bit of coffee. It was called coffee milk because it looked more like a milk but with a slight taste of coffee. It was pure delight!

How Do Coffee Beans Become Coffee?

Coffee beans grow on shrubs in warm climates such as Africa, Latin America and southern Asia. They are actually referred to as coffee berries at this stage and they are a green or red, fleshy berry on the evergreen bush of the Coffea. They undergo several processes before they resemble the coffee you buy in a shop.

Plants need to be at least 3 years old before they produce anything useful and at the stage that the berries turn from green to red, they are ready to be picked.

Firstly, the berries are harvested (either by hand or mechanically). If the berries are picked by hand, only the ripe ones need to be harvested. If strip picked, the whole crop is harvested at once, whether by hand or by machine.

The flesh then needs to be removed to get at the seeds (beans) inside. There are two ways of doing this - the wet or the dry method.

In the wet method, the berries are put in water to sort the good ones from the bad. The berries are pushed through a screen and some of the pulp is removed. To remove the rest of the pulp, they are either fermented and then washed in clean water or mechanically scrubbed. The beans are then dried in the sun or by machine.

In the dry method, the berries are dried in the sun on large sheets. They are turned frequently and protected from rain. It can take several weeks to dry the berries to the required amount. This is the traditional method and good for places where water is in short supply.

The next stage is to hull the beans to take off any remaining layers of berry. This can leave behind silvery skin still but these can be removed if the beans are polished (an optional process). The now clean and dry beans are sorted by size, density and colour. This part of production is called Milling.

Some people like their coffee to have an aged flavour. The taste for this came about because the first coffee to arrive in Europe was brought on boats and took many weeks to make the journey.

The green beans need to be roasted to make the coffee you buy in supermarkets. This involves them being put into a drum and heated. They are kept on the move to stop them burning. It transforms the physical and chemical properties of the beans. This is actually this process that gives the characteristic flavours because the heat causes the beans to expand and change in colour, small, taste and density. At an internal temperature of approximately 400 degrees, the tasty oils (caffeol) start to come to the surface. The degree to which the beans are roasted will determine the flavour.

The beans all darken during roasting. Light roasts are ones such as cinnamon roast or New England, medium roasts are those such as American, and strong roasts are those such as Viennese.

Once roasted to the desired degree, the beans are removed and cooled.

The roasted beans can be sold to the consumer to grind at home, or they can be factory ground before they are packaged and sold on for home use.

Quick Tips for Better Coffee

When I was growing up, I remember my parents starting off every day with a freshly perked pot of coffee. I can still remember that sound as the hot water splashed off the top of the lid and worked its way down through the ground up coffee my mother had let me scoop into the filter chamber. Now that I'm older, I have developed my own love for the taste of properly brewed coffee. Many people are far too quick to hand over outrageous sums of cash for a cup of what is sold as premium coffee. If you follow some of the tips below, you may find that you are quite satisfied with the java you can make yourself in the comfort of your own home for a fraction of the cost.

· It may be tempting to buy large bulk containers of already ground coffee beans, but this can lead to a serious loss of flavor. For the best taste, use freshly ground coffee beans every time you brew a pot. This may sound like a major inconvenience, but small coffee grinders are fairly inexpensive and can last for a long time under normal home conditions.

· If you are considering getting a coffee grinder, a burr style grinder is best for getting consistent results. The coarseness of the ground up coffee should be adjusted according to the method you will use for brewing. Turkish coffee lovers will want an extremely fine ground size, while those who love to use a French press will need a texture that is much more coarse.

· Drink out of a good quality, clean mug. This may sound silly, but drinking out of a plastic refill mug or a disposable paper cup can definitely affect the taste of what you are drinking. Besides, using the same mug is much more friendly to the environment than using a new disposable cup every day.

· If you enjoy iced coffee, do yourself a favor and check your ice supply. Old ice tends to take on some rather unpleasant smells and tastes after it sits for a while in the freezer. Clean your trays and start off with fresh ice.

· One simple trick to improve the flavor of your coffee is to increase the coffee to water ratio. Many people use much less than coffeehouses use. Most people measure out about one tablespoon per cup. Try doubling that to two tablespoons and see if you like the difference. If that is too much, just scale back a bit.

Making great coffee is not rocket science. You will get the best results by using high quality coffee beans, good brewing equipment, and clean, pure water. The subtleties of the various brewing styles are there for you to explore until you find your favorite method. Enjoy the learning experience!

Coffee Makes You Happy

Drinking coffee regularly has several benefits, so if it is your choice of beverage purely for the taste, then unknowingly your favorite sip is also a cup of good health for you. Here's how:

Coffee reduces your risk of developing Parkinson's disease: Those who drink about 3 cups of coffee in a day aren't as likely to develop Parkinson's disease in later life as non-coffee drinkers.

Coffee reduces the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease: If you drink about three to five cups of coffee a day, you reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease in later life. If, however, you drink about two cups of coffee a day, you significantly reduce the risk of developing dementia along with Alzheimer's disease.

Coffee reduces your risk of cancers: A high consumption of coffee per day reduces your chances of developing cancers of the mouth, esophagus and pharynx.

Coffee minimizes the ill-effects of liver damage: Coffee provides your liver with protection necessary if you're a big alcoholic, thus also reducing your chances of developing cirrhosis of the liver. It also reduces the risk of one developing hepatocellular carcinoma, which is a basic liver cancer that is seen in patients suffering from cirrhosis.

Coffee protects one from cardiovascular disease: Coffee is responsible for reducing the chances of one suffering from cardiovascular disease.

Coffee cuts your risk of gallstone disease: To reduce the incidence of developing gallbladder disease and gallstones in men and women, it's necessary to be a heavy drinker of decaffeinated coffee.

Coffee prevents the formation of dental cavities: The presence of tannins in coffee serve to reduce the cancer-spreading potential that some foods have and so reduce the formation of dental plaque which leads to the formation of cavities.

Improves your short-term memory: If coffee sharpens your brain, what's stopping you from having just another cuppa? In fact, die-hard coffee drinkers have proved to have the functions of faster short-term memory than others.

Helps you fight free radicals: By helping you fight free radicals, coffee increases the amount of antioxidants in your body, which would otherwise damage the cells all over your body.

Helps relieve the pain of headaches and migraine: The caffeine content of coffee helps in managing the pain of headaches and migraine.

Reduces the risk of diabetes: By drinking high amounts of coffee regularly, the risk of developing diabetes mellitus type 2 is reduced by 50%.

Improves mental performance: Those who drink coffee regularly perform better on all tests of memory and reasoning than non-coffee drinkers. If you drink coffee all your life, in old age you perform better on cognitive tests and any activity associated with the mind or memory.

Makes you happy: Coffee also contains dopamine which enters the bloodstream every time you drink coffee. It is responsible for keeping one happy, but only if you limit your number of cups of coffee to about two. Any more will increase your risk for anxiety. So, be careful with your coffee. Life Health

Coffee Ingredients

A cup of coffee in the morning, especially while reading newspaper is a must, without which we simply cannot start our day-to-day activities, isn't it? Take a sip of coffee and it can instantly stimulate the body and the mind. Coffee increases mental alertness as well as acts as an effective anti-depressant. No wonder, it is the most popular beverage in many countries. It hardly takes time to prepare coffee and once it is made, no one can resist its aroma and taste.

Coffee Granules Ingredients

The main chemical ingredients in coffee beans are given below:
  • Caffeine
  • Tannin
  • Thiamin
  • Xanthine
  • Spermidine
  • Guaiacol
  • Citric Acid
  • Chlorogenic acid
  • Acetaldehyde
  • Spermine
  • Putrescine
  • Scopoletin
A cup of coffee is well-known for its ability to stimulate the nervous system, which improves our alertness and concentration. This in turn increases our ability to stay wide awake when needed. The stimulant property of coffee has been attributed to xanthine derivatives, some of which are given below:
  • Theobromine
  • Caffeine
  • Theophylline
  • Trigonelline
  • Hypoxanthine
Ask any coffee lover about the USP of this popular drink and pat would be the reply - aroma. So, does that mean the irresistible aroma of a cup of coffee is due to the aforementioned ingredients. No! Phenolic compounds in the coffee seeds are responsible for producing this refreshing aroma. Apart from aroma, the phenols also impart a characteristic flavor and color to the coffee. Some of these phenolic compounds are listed below:
  • 4-Ethylphenol
  • 2,4-Methylenephenol
  • 2, 3, 5-Trimethylphenol
  • 4-Methoxy-4-Vinylphenol
  • 2-Ethylphenol
Phenolic acids that display antioxidant properties are found in ample amounts in a cup of coffee. For instance, ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid and caffeic acid that are categorized as phenolic acids are present in coffee. So, to reap benefits of antioxidant activity in coffee, taking it in moderation is necessary.

Coffee Ingredients

Coffee, no doubt is a delicious drink, but many people are unaware of its ingredients. There are a number of variations, when it comes to making a hot cup of coffee but the ingredients remain the same. The common coffee ingredients are as follows:

Sugar
Sugar plays a very crucial role to enhance the taste of this beverage. Depending upon your taste and liking, you can add 1 or 2 teaspoons in your coffee. Coffee without sugar will give an unpleasant taste to the beverage.

Milk
There are people who prefer to make coffee without milk. Honestly speaking, this is not a good habit and drinking coffee without milk can be detrimental to health. Although drinking coffee can have few side effects, an easy way to significantly minimize these health problems, would be to add milk to coffee.

Coffee Granules
Coffee granules are nothing but coffee beans that are extracted from coffee plant. This is the main ingredient of coffee, without which this delicious drink cannot be made.

Water
In order to prepare coffee, the required amount of water is first heated and then accordingly ground coffee is added. Although using hard water in coffee is not an issue, one should prefer soft water for a better tantalizing taste.

Coffee - Is it Good for Health?

A cup of coffee is highly refreshing and one should never take it in excess amount. Coffee is very high in caffeine and so taking several cups of coffee in a day is dangerous for health. The combination of caffeine and tannin, can also put a person in the risk zone of several diseases. For instance, the stimulating effect of coffee can cause sleep deprivation and disturb normal sleeping pattern. Getting sleep after coffee is difficult and people after having coffee tend to remain wide awake for long periods of time. Coffee in large doses can raise cholesterol level and increase the probability of formation of kidney stones. Heavy coffee drinking is definitely harmful for health and this habit needs to be stopped immediately. Read more on negative effects of coffee.

After knowing coffee ingredients, especially caffeine, I hope heavy coffee drinkers think twice, before having another cup of coffee. Consuming it in moderation is the key to stay away from its ill effects. In fact, doctors believe that one can make coffee an integral part of their diet, when its taken in moderate amounts.

A point to note that coffee beans that are packed and available under various brands are roasted. As a result, some of the compounds of coffee beans are lost in roasting, whereas some combine with oxygen to produce new compounds. Nevertheless, coffee beans are still able to retain some of its beneficial properties after roasting.

Coffee and Your Health - Can Coffee Help Prevent a Stroke?

While attending college my English professor actually allowed us to pick a subject, and write a 2,000 to 3,000 word essay that would extoll the virtue of our chosen subject. I gave it some consideration, and at the campus coffee shop, decided that since i had a near addiction to coffee, it was the ideal subject.

I was astounded by the rather large amount of significant study that had been done on medical benefits derived from drinking a single serving of coffee each morning. Having narrowed my search parameters, I selected those benefits in stroke reduction for a study group ranging in age from age 35 to age 65. It appears that this group receives marginally more benefit than other age groups. The benefits outlined as most significant were that stroke reduction can be accomplished by reducing blood pressure, stress, and plaque buildup in the arteries.

Coffee serves these needs in a most unique way. Coffee reduces stress by acting as a very mild depressant.

Coffee is also beneficial in reducing blood pressure, by contributing to blood thinning. It is known that if you exercise, and keep your blood circulation rate high through strenuous exercise, your body heats, sweats, and you generally feel warm. Coffee when absorbed provides the same effect on a very temporary basis. After exercise, you remain overheated for approximately 45 min to 1 hour.

Drinking a single cup of coffee will provide that same warm feeling for 20 to 30 minutes, just with less exertion. The part of this that you do not see it the part that actually does the work. The caffeine will be absorbed by the body, enter the bloodstream in microscopic amounts, and act as a very mild blood thinner.

This in effect makes it easier for the blood to flow, around plaque buildups that naturally occur in every human being, beginning from the time we are born.

Making the blood thinner reduces pressure on the heart, arteries and veins. Reducing the pressure, reduces chance of stroke. This rather simple deduction, although startling in itself, is the best solution for the majority, because we all just naturally dread the thought of being hospitalized, having a qualified physician telling us that to avoid stroke (in the future), we must basically rearrange our lives to reduce stress, control our blood pressure, eat a more healthy diet, avoid salty and fatty foods, and the list of change seems endless. Drinking coffee one or two times a day seems like such a simple thing to do to avoid all that, and possibly some life changing experience, I wonder why it has never been widely published before.

James E. Shappie

Research of the various benefits of coffee were first recorded in a study of perceived benefits in the coffee houses of England in 1661, as being able to "dry up the crudities of the stomach", and "Expelling fumes out of the head". There were also similar studies condemning its use. My research also must give credit to M.

Pendergast, author of several books, who has done nearly every possible research on coffee as it is known today.

Using Popcorn Poppers For Roasting Coffee Beans, Yes Or No

With more and more people becoming espresso coffee maker aficionados at home the practice of bean roasting is definitely on the rise. By taking on the process of roasting green coffee beans at home one not only cuts the cost of coffee by up to one half but also enjoys some of the best coffee imaginable. That being said, one should be willing to make a small investment in a coffee roaster which is designed for that purpose. Although there is much information available on using popcorn poppers to roast green coffee beans, for the following reasons it is not recommended here:

1. There are safety issues such as a fire starting due to combustion of either the beans or an overheated popcorn popper. This may be unlikely but is a definite possibility and no machine even a roaster designed for coffee beans should ever be left unattended.

2. Health issues could arise from the prolonged inhalation of smoke and the chaff from the green coffee beans. There is also a possibility of being burned from handling an overheated popcorn popper and/or extremely hot coffee beans. Note: many coffee roasters emit a certain amount of smoke and may need to be used in the garage or outdoors.

3. Using the popcorn popper for roasting coffee beans is not the intended use and will void the manufacturer's warranty.

4. Chances are that if one tries the popcorn popper for roasting it will only be a short amount of time and they will want to step it up a level to a roaster designed for that purpose. Now the investment for the popcorn popper and other utensils used with it is now wasted.

5. Lastly, consistency is a problem when using a popcorn popper for roasting coffee beans. From one roast to another it is really like rolling the dice and quality green coffee beans can be wasted.

Bean roasting is not only the starting place in the home espresso maker process it really completes the experience. It is really fun to watch the process and experiment with different degrees of roast and various blends of beans from various origins. There are various roasters available for use at home today that are very inexpensive (starting around one hundred dollars) and they perform excellently so why not use them instead of something that is not specifically designed for coffee.

Coffee roasting from a professional's point of view is really a highly technical process and art that should be respected as such. It must be stated that home roasting will always be hard pressed to duplicate the consistency and quality of your favorite roaster but with practice and some good note taking it can be a very close second. The process of home roasting is absolutely encouraged if for no other reason than to understand the complete process of the espresso coffee maker.

This writing is not intended to criticize those who have written about the use of popcorn poppers in the past. It is just felt that with the very nominal cost of coffee roasters today that one should take advantage of the engineering and design factors and enjoy a higher success rate for high quality coffee beans. Also using a roaster designed for coffee does eliminate some safety concerns (manufacturer's safety instructions must still be followed). It is for these reasons that using popcorn poppers for use other popping corn is not recommended.

If you decide to give roasting a try you will now have three opportunities to enjoy the amazing aroma of coffee, once when using the roaster once when using the grinder and once when using your espresso coffee maker to pull that shot. Enjoy every step along the way.

Note: Although espresso is the term mostly used here this all applies to the drip coffee process as well.

Gourmet Coffee Blends Are Delicious And Interesting!

Gourmet coffee blends are not only delicious, but also a wonderful way to try different roasts of coffee! Blending coffee can be a culinary adventure of experiencing different aromas and flavors to delight the senses. They are perfect for entertaining, drinking after dinner, or in the morning. They also make great gift ideas for anyone who appreciates coffee!

One of the most popular blends of coffee, that probably almost everyone has heard of, is the After Dinner blend. This blend of coffee is an old tradition started long ago. The idea of an After Dinner blend is the hostess of the dinner party serves it with dessert or after everyone has stuffed themselves after enjoying a delicious gourmet meal. This blend is perfect for accompanying sweet offerings such as chocolate mousse, Tiramisu or even a slice of cherry pie. Many gourmet After Dinner blends tend to be intense, to give that pop of wow as the final to do at a dinner party. Many of these blends are also French Roast inspired and typically taste smooth, dark, and delicious.

Another very popular blend on the radar these days is Cafe blend. Cafe blends are made to be sipped on and enjoyed leisurely for people who truly love to experience a cup of coffee. Envision a stroll on a Venice boardwalk or relaxing at a Paris Cafe, and you have the vision a Cafe blend is going for. Typically these blends of coffee are combinations of Central and South American coffees that have amazing depth, wonderful aromas and bittersweet qualities on the palate. Something like dark chocolate notes with tart raspberry would be an example of a Cafe blend.

Morning blend is something any of us can appreciate who need a kick of caffeine in the morning to get going! Personally, I cannot imagine facing a work day without my daily dose of delicious coffee. Many Morning blends utilize beans from Brazil that are simple with a wonderfully light aroma. Typically a lively blend that is balanced perfectly and has notes of sweetness that are perfect for a morning cup of Joe! One of the best Morning blends I have tried is Timothy's Morning Blend Coffee, that is conveniently made for use with Keurig and single brew coffee pots as well as normal coffee pots.

There are so many blends available on the market today it is hard to keep up! Some of the other popular ones are French Roast, House Blend, and Italian Roasts.

Organic Coffee Benefits That Can Improve Your Health

Organic Coffee benefits are the advantages you gain from drinking coffee grown organically without any chemical induction during the growing process. Coffee is one of the world's most taken beverages because of its knack to get you alert, feeling fresh and leaves you with a good mood for the day. However coffee has more to offer besides the known caffeine benefits; it can actually improve your health if it's grown the organic way as opposed to the conventional farming where lots of chemicals are used.

One of the vivid organic coffee benefits is the chemical free consumption of the end products. Organic coffee is grown without the addition of insecticides and herbicides to control weeds and pests. This will result in an end product that is fresh and untainted by any chemical additives. According to health experts, chemicals used in conventional growing of coffee often seep into the plant and are contained in the coffee beans during harvesting, washing, drying, roasting and eventually brewing. Ingestion of the chemicals result in them being deposited on the fat cells of the body and may remain un-excreted for years.

More on organic coffee, consumption of such beverage gives you the guarantee that no toxins are lodged in the body which keeps your health in check. Coffee grown organically also has a more natural flavor to it compared to conventionally grown type. Chemical additives often drain out nutrients, meaning part of the rich flavor is lost when the berries are eventually picked. Unrefined coffee is rich in anti-oxidants, vital components that help you fight harmful body cells that trigger cancerous growths, prevent diabetes and reduce the aging process. So going organic with your coffee is a free insurance cover against diseases and aging.

Organic coffee has also been proven to contain magnesium and chromium minerals in large amounts, compared to conventionally grown coffee. These minerals, as part of the organic coffee benefits, help in regulating blood sugar levels in the body; so you have a good chance of preventing high or low blood pressure with a can of organic coffee tucked in your kitchen shelf. More coffee benefits are being discovered everyday with the latest discovery being that coffee is a prerequisite to weight loss. A cup of coffee is said to contain a minimum of 5 calories, and incorporating it into your diet plan helps reduce appetite while boosting energy usage.

Coffee has proven that coffee isn't all that harmful given the fears of caffeine by many people. The organic coffee are as simple as explained above; unrefined coffee has no chemicals so it won't leave any toxins in your body, it contains anti-oxidants which help fight and prevent diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure.

Moreover, untreated coffee bring other organic coffee benefits like the reduction of weight due to its ability to reduce appetite and helping the body burn more calories.

What Is K Cup Coffee?

There has been quite a buzz about K cups in the past couple of years. If you are not familiar with them, the K cup is something that is used in a coffee machine called a Keurig. The reason there is such a buzz about them is because the single serve type coffee machines have become one of the most popular ways to brew coffee in recent years.

So what exactly is a K cup and how does it work? A K cup is a small plastic cup with a foil covering on it. Inside of this cup is a premeasured amount of coffee as well as a small filter. This small cup is loaded into the Keurig coffee machine in its designated location. A lever is then used to close the machine for brewing. When the lever is closed, the foil on the top of the cup is punctured with a small hole that allows the hot water to flow in. At the same time, a small hole is punctured in the bottom of the plastic cup. This hole allows the brewed coffee to flow out of the K cup and into the coffee cup. When the brewing cycle is completed, the lever is simply raised back up and the K cup is removed to be discarded.

Why is there such a buzz about K cups? K cups are used in the single serve coffee brewer called a Keurig. This type of brewing has become very popular in recent years because it enables you to brew an individual cup of coffee easily and at any time of the day. The Keurig coffee machine warms up in approximately two minutes and, once the K cup is loaded and the size selected, it will brew a cup of coffee in 60 seconds. It is easy to operate and makes no mess. There is no measuring or cleaning up of coffee grounds. You simply need to purchase the machine, fill it with water, and select the K cups of your choice.

What kinds of coffees come in K cups? There are over 250 different kinds of beverages that come in the K cup pods. Coffees can be purchased in caffeinated and non-caffeinated versions. They come in varying strengths from light roasts all the way to extra bold roasts. There are many different brands and a wide variety of flavored coffees as well. K cups come in many different types of teas and hot chocolate beverages also.

Is it difficult to find and purchase K cups? The largest selection of K cups can be found on different internet sites. If you would rather go to a store to purchase your K cups, you can find them in many different stores. Stores like Bed, Bath & Beyond, Kohl's, Kroger, Walmart, Target, etc. carry a smaller selection than what you will find online but you can purchase these and use them the same day.

Single serve coffee makers are the newest and most popular way to brew coffee. This is why there is such a buzz about the K cups. By purchasing a machine like the Keurig that uses these K cups, you will have access to the largest selection of gourmet coffees, teas, and hot chocolates to enjoy any time of the day from the comfort of your own home.

My name is Terri I. I am a stay-at-home mom and I spend a lot of time on the computer while my children are at school. The Amazing Benefits of Drinking Coffee

We all love our cup of coffee, but are you aware of some of the many other potential benefits it can bring to your life?

According to studies, coffee drinkers are happy at work, don't get depressed, have less stress, and suffer less from colon cancer, arthritis and diabetes. In addition it has been shown that coffee is safe to drink in pregnancy and is even healthier to drink than black tea.

Please note that these are the claims of research studies and are not meant to serve as medical advice.
While it is understood that consuming any product in large quantities is potentially harmful, research has shown that drinking five cups of coffee daily is not a problem to general health.

Harvard Medical School studies have shown that instances of skin cancer are reduced amongst coffee drinkers. The risk is reduced by about 20% in women and 10% in men if they consume more than three cups a day on average. It has also been independently shown that coffee can reduce the risk of liver cirrhosis, colon cancer and developing gallstones.

A popular TV news channel recently reported that consuming black coffee is a healthier alternative than black tea. According to an interview with Chris Kilham, founder of Medical Hunter in the US, coffee contains special antioxidants called flavonoids which can help with cardiovascular problems and help reduce heart attacks and strokes.

Fighting depression - A long term study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that women who consumed four or more cups of coffee a day were 20% less likely to suffer from depression than those that only had one cup per day. Those consuming less, but still having two or three cups still showed a 15% reduction in showing signs of depression. This extensive research was conducted over a decade of study.

It is now thought that drinking coffee before exercise can enhance ones performance. This is according to Dr Pamela Peeke of Discovery Health TV. She claims that drinking coffee can enhance the bodies performance in both short term and long term physical activity.

Drinking coffee when pregnant also seems to be safe for the mother and baby. According to Chris Kilham, again speaking on Fox News, drinking coffee does not appear to increase the chances of a miscarriage.
Who would have thought that something that tastes so satisfying could be good for you!!

Coffee is a very interesting subject. Visit the Coffee School section of our website to find lots of additional information on coffee and coffee machines.

A Glass Coffee Table - Blending Class, Creativity and Freshness

It is often said that there are certain times and certain areas which provide a feeling of tranquil and hence people zero-in these aspects when the point turns towards relaxing. Similarly, there are certain types of furniture which also manage to soothe us and provide a sense of calmness. And one aspect is the segment of coffee tables, more so the beautifully shaped and unique styled glass ones.

From gracing the interiors of houses to being the prized possessions in office pantries, and from providing coziness at the reception area to making an open area look full and beautiful, glass tables are a sheer visual treat. Glass tables come in various sizes, shapes, patterns, designs and some even are suited for certain purposes, like say coffee tables or a read, or even a showpiece with articles displayed on it. And if glass tables are an artistic mind's possession, then nothing like it.

He or she will use it or display it as a form of art. In the last decade or so with the super success of the IT industry, there have been many customizations when it comes to the cafeteria, pantries and break out rooms. And one of the most experimented aspects is the glass table segment. Coffee is a relaxant and break time is a stress buster and what makes these aspects blend well is a nice table. Unlike earlier when there were only 2 or say 3 types of coffee tables, now we have a complete new and unique range of glass coffee tables.

As there are hundreds of coffee tables in terms of designs, materials used and other aspects, there are many ways to classify the entire coffee table segment. Some popular types of classifications are discussed as follows:

Glass Coffee Tables as Per Shape:
  • Square shaped tables
  • Rectangular shaped ones
  • Oval shaped glass tables
  • Round shaped tables
Tables Bifurcated as Per Materials Used:

Apart from glass being the most used material, there are other materials like leather, wood, steel, MDF, other metals etc.

Coffee Glass Tables According to the Legs:
  • Tables with 4 legs
  • 3 legged tables
  • 2 legs or sided tables
  • Singular big leg arrangement
  • Amorphous arrangements
Tables According to Colors:

As there are many add-ons and some extra workings available with many brands and also with custom made tables, there are certain other color splashes available apart from the traditional glass transparent color. The 'glass coffee table' segment of offers many type of colored glasses, some with embroidered designs and so on.

According to the Style:

This is one of the most important bifurcations in this sector. Some popular styles include:
  • Rustic
  • Traditional
  • Modern
  • Contemporary
  • Artistic
The artistic types of tables have witnessed many style experiments and some of these come with heavy price tags attached to them. The designs can be as simple as single contoured to complex ones which for some won't even look like a glass coffee table.

Becoming a Successful Coffee Shop Owner - Do You Have What It Takes? 7 Criteria

From the outside, the life of a coffee shop owner might look kind of fun or - dare we say "cool," even? And, it without a doubt can be all of the above for many who have attempted their own coffee venture.

However, there is an element of running a successful coffee business that relies squarely on having good business sense, the right training, and the stamina and guts to see things through both good times and bad. Owning or managing your own coffee shop is less like a sprint and more like a marathon.

If you are interested in becoming a successful coffee shop owner, check to see if you meet each of the following 7 criteria:

1. You have talked in depth with current or past coffee shop owners to get their insights:

The first step in becoming successful with any venture is to learn from those who have gone before you. A great way to get a general feel for how this type of business is run is to spend some time behind the counter at a friend's coffee shop. Or, at the very least: buy dinner for the owner of a (non-competing) coffee shop and pick his or her brain about what it is really like to run a coffee business.

2. You love people:

The coffee business is without a doubt a "people business." You will not be successful if you prefer to escape off to your back office when things get busy while your employees handle things out front. Rather, you need to be where the action is, which means interacting with people on a daily basis. If you do not like people much, try a different line of work.

3. You have a mind for efficiency:

Once your business is up-and-running, making it successful in the long haul is all about efficiency (again think marathon, not sprint). You need to have a mind for balancing cost considerations with having enough fresh coffee and other materials on hand to meet customer demand.

4. You are willing to learn new technical skills:

Your fancy new coffee equipment will come with plenty of "how-to" instructional manuals, but those manuals will not adequately teach you the nuances behind the techniques you need to know. Rather, be willing to seek in-person training so that you can get the techniques down just right. Your customers will thank you for it by frequenting your shop more often to get more of your delicious product.

5. You have an understanding of brand-building:

Think that only big-name companies can afford to build a brand? Think again. Every company, large or small, needs to build their brand. And, building a strong brand that people recognize and come to love is about more than just creating a cool logo.

6. Slow weeks or months don't bother you:

Another thing about running the marathon that is a successful coffee business: having the guts and stamina to stick it out when you experience a temporary downturn in your business. This is partly something that is learned, but it is also something that you need to have inside of you.

7. You are open to receiving ongoing education and training:

Things change over time: new equipment is purchased, new techniques are invented, and old skills atrophy if not used often enough. Every business owner should be willing to seek out continuous training for both themselves and their employees.

As you consider the best way to make a go of it in the retail coffee industry, check your qualifications against these 7 criteria. If needed, seek out training from professional coffee business consultants who have helped others achieve the same level of success you seek for yourself.

Do You Enjoy Pumpkin Spice Coffee?

Do you know what? I love pumpkin spice, butter toffee, mocha mint and all the other varieties of coffee flavors. I think for me, it is just this time of year. Living here in upstate, New York and those of you who believe upstate is the North end of New York City, would be wrong. Upstate, is actually anything above New York City.

We are close to Syracuse, home of the fighting Orange and this time of year means football, cooler temperatures and all the leaves on the trees changing to beautiful orange, red, yellow, and green colors, and watching the rolling hillside explode with vibrant colors.

It is also the time of year I start craving everything fall; like football, hunting and my delicious flavored coffees, teas, cocoa beverages and of course great food! There is just something great about the full flavor of a great cup of pumpkin spice coffee when you are standing out on the porch watching the turkeys or the whitetail deer running across the hillside, or standing down at the barn looking over Oneida Lake (it sits down in the bottom of the Mohawk valley), nestled in amongst the colors of fall with the mist rising off the water and into the blue skies.

So, to make this time of year more fun, easier, and be able to indulge my hot beverage habit, I started looking into the new trend of single serve home brewing systems, and found that there are a lot out there. I have been so set in my ways of going out and buying a one pound bag of coffee, getting it in a few different flavors, and either mixing a couple, or having one kind at a time, that I never really thought there could be a better way.

I would make a full pot of coffee every time in my Mr. Coffee or my Black and Decker coffeemaker. And don't get me wrong, it is very good and those machines make an excellent cup of coffee. I even have my bur coffee bean grinder and while I do like to get the fresh beans and make a good cup of coffee, I am not a coffee snob and don't use a French Press and check the water temperature and all that good stuff. I am sure that doing it that way, would make an excellent cup of coffee and I will do it some time real soon, but I haven't yet.

The point I am getting to is this. The new "single serve brewing systems" are amazing! The variety of brands and varieties of coffees is phenomenal. I have researched and done my "due diligence" and have come up with what I believe is the best system out there. if you would like to know more please go to Keurig Reviews.

Coffee Machine Reviews - Best Coffee Machine

What could be better than a freshly brewed cup of coffee in the comfort of your own home?

Well, if that's something you love, a coffee machine could just be the perfect addition to your kitchen.
However, there is so much choice out there that finding the best coffee machine for you can be difficult.

From well-known brands like Tassimo and De'Longhi, high-end brands like Jura, to niche brands like Francis Francis and Ascaso.

Not only that, each brand offers a plethora of models and types. There are traditional espresso machines, more expensive automatic bean-to-cup machines, and the increasingly popular pod and capsule type. Not forgetting the good old filter machine of course.

Once you've decided what kind of machine to go for you then have the headache of trying to find a model within your price range.

With such a lot to consider let's see if we can clear things up and look at some of the main brands and machine types in more detail in the following coffee machine reviews.

Espresso machines are still very popular despite being around for a long time now. Ground coffee is used in these machines, which means that you can brew an espresso just the way you like it, and to coffee shop standard, using your favourite coffee.

The problem with this is that you need to do everything manually from measuring the correct quantity of coffee to put into the machine, and tamping down the coffee just enough to get the desired result, to having to clean the machine after every use. So it really depends on what's important to you - if you want full control over the brewing process, including pressuring the correct amount of water through the coffee to extract just enough flavour in order to get the best possible espresso, then an espresso machine could be for you.

However, most modern espresso machines can accept coffee pods, which contain pre-prepared ground coffee that you just place in the machine. While this simplifies some of the issues above it does narrow the choice of coffee you have and the control over the brewing process.

Most coffee machine companies produce espresso machines, such as the De'Longhi Icona ECO310. In terms of price it really depends on what you're looking for. The Krups XP5240 might be a good choice if you're simply looking for a no-frills machine that delivers a good espresso. If build quality is key the Cuisinart EM200U is a good choice - it'll go forever and produce great coffee. Maybe design is the most important factor? Then how about the stunning Francis Francis range or Ascaso Dream - but you'll pay a premium for looks.

If you want your morning coffee quicker and with less fuss, a pod or capsule system could be the answer.
Whilst being simple and cheap to use these machines produce a good cup of coffee and are becoming increasingly popular in busy homes.

They also often offer a lot of choice as you can buy capsules that can produce an array of different drinks, from lattes and cappuccinos to teas and hot chocolate.

These machines have their own range of capsules which are specifically made for that particular system.
A sealed amount of ground coffee is contained in each capsule which is simply popped into the machine, which in turn usually reads a bar-code on the capsule and then produces the drink through a set of pre-programmed stages. All very clever, simple, and clean.

Each capsule is simply removed from the machine after use and disposed of.

There are many well known producers of this type of machine such as Tassimo (Bosch), Dolce Gusto (Krups), and Senseo (Philips). They all offer a more affordable option than the last type we'll look at - automatic bean-to-cup machines.

As the name indicates automatic bean-to-cup machines produce coffee directly from coffee beans. Also, as the name suggests, all this is taken care of by the machine. You simply have to feel the container on top of the machine with your personal choice of coffee beans, set the machine up with your individual settings, and the machine does everything else - it grinds the coffee beans, measures the correct amount of grounds, tamps the grounds, extracts the flavour from the grounds at a professional 15 bar (or higher) pressure, and also froths milk if required.

The great thing about automatic bean-to-cup machines is that they provide great coffee like an espresso machine and yet offer the simplicity of a capsule machine.

But that comes at a price. High-end machines like the Jura S can set you back a pretty penny, while the popular De'Longhi Prima Donna and Magnifica models, while still expensive, will cost considerably less. The Krups Espresseria EA8080 offers great value at a similar price to a top of the range espresso maker.
So you pay your money and take your choice, but with so much choice on offer there really is something for every taste and every budget.

Melitta Thermal Coffee Brewer - The Secret to Making Great Tasting Coffee Fast

Time for a New Coffee Maker

With my old coffee maker on the fritz and taking way too long to brew my coffee, it was high time I invested in a new one! After looking at a few online I decided to find a coffee maker that was easy to use, fast and above all made great tasting coffee!

I picked up the Melitta 10 cup Thermal Coffee Brewer and couldn't wait to make some coffee with it. (It's just me, but I REALLY like coffee) After making my first cup, I've never looked back!

Brewing My First Cup of Coffee with the Melitta Coffee Brewer

Switching to the Melitta meant that I'd have to change from flat filters to the cone shape but this was not an issue as the Brewer came with filters already. I filled the top loading water reservoir to the 4 cup mark and away we went. 4 cups is the least amount indicated on the carafe. While I'd like to have a lesser option, 4 is fine.

The Melitta's Regular, Bold, and Robust settings adjust the temperature of the water during heating, a hotter brewing temperature makes for richer tasting coffee! For my first cup, Regular would be just fine. And I was not disappointed. Not only did it make coffee quickly, but it made GREAT coffee quickly!

The Melitta Coffee Brewer will make 10 full cups in roughly the same amount of time give or take a minute or two. After brewing the coffee the carafe heated and STAYED hot! I'm sure you think, 'That's what it's supposed to do!' Agreed! However, after the Melitta Coffee Brewer's hot plate heats the pot, IT GOES OFF! All that richness stays in the thermal coffee pot and keeping piping hot for hours!

Programmable Coffee with the Melitta Coffee Brewer

Wake up late or need to rush out the door? The Melitta Thermal Coffee Brewer is programmable! Now fresh coffee is ready waiting for me as I come down the stairs in the morning! (Now if I could get it to just let the dog out too.)

Leaving it on is no problem as well as the Melitta Thermal Coffee Brewer has a 2-hour automatic shutoff, making my new coffee maker not only user friendly but now fool proof!

Melitta Coffee Brewer Has Well Placed Controls

What do I like best about the Melitta Thermal Coffee Brewer? It's not the generous carafe that never goes cold, or the automatic shut off that keeps me from burning the house down; it's the placement of the controls!
Most coffee makers have the buttons and at the bottom, near the base of the pot, but Melitta had another idea. There's nothing worse than an overflowed coffee, unless you considered overflowed coffee on your coffee makers controls!

Or how about going to push a button and hitting the hot pot instead? Now that is a thing of the past! With the controls at the top of the coffee maker the result is far less unforced scalds to the fingers!

A Dependable Coffee Brewer

Whether it's getting my morning started or giving me a boost mid-afternoon (or my favorite midnight pot!) my coffee maker has yet to let me down! Brewing coffee for ten or brewing for two, I found it all in the Melitta 10-cup Coffee Brewer! Trade your hot plate heating, coffee burning pot for one that keeps your Coffee fresh, clean and hot.
